The Delhi High Court on 3 May 2011 issued contempt notice to nine office-bearers of the Indian Commercial Pilots’ Association (ICPA) and asked them to respond to the notice within two weeks. Air India pilots went on a strike which the Delhi High Court feels was resulting in losses to the nation. The two-judge Bench also appointed senior lawyer Siddharth Luthra as amicus curaie to assist on the legal issues.
Over 800 pilots, who originally belonged to the Indian Airlies and now owe allegiance to the ICPA, are on an indefinite strike since 27 April 2011. They demanded pay parity vis-a-vis Air India pilots. The ICPA claims that while AI pilots enjoy a huge fixed salary component, the same is almost minuscule for former IA pilots in 2007.
Air India on the other hand decided to implement no work, no pay principle to counter the pilots' strike that continued to disrupt its flights for the seventh day.
