Social activist Dorothy Height died at the age of 98 years on 20 April 2010. She was a pioneer of the 1960s movement and had joined historic marches with Martin Luther King Jr. She led the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years. 

Social activist Dorothy Height died at the age of 98 years on 20 April 2010. She was a pioneer of the 1960s movement and had joined historic marches with Martin Luther King Jr. She led the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years. Height's civil rights involvement began in 1933 with her taking up a leadership role at the United Christian Youth Movement of North America. She devoted herself to fighting the practice of lynching and she also pushed for desegregation of the armed forces. She was described as the ‘godmother of the civil rights movement’ by US president Obama.
