Earthquake of magnitude 5.5 on the Richter scale jolted Pakistan

The epicenter of the quake that jolted parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was in the Hindukush mountain ranges of the border area of Tajikistan-Pakistan at a depth of 144 kilometres.

A moderate earthquake of magnitude 5.5 on the Richter scale struck Pakistan on 28 April 2015. The epicenter of the quake that jolted parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was in the Hindukush mountain ranges on the border area of Tajikistan-Pakistan at a depth of 144 kilometres.

The tremors of the earthquake were felt in Malakand, Swat, Upper and Lower Dir.

Pakistan which lies on an active continental plate boundary is often hit by earthquakes. Earlier in September 2013, 376 people were killed when an earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck Pakistan`s Balochistan province. Similarly in 2005, the country was hit by an earthquake of magnitude 7.6 in which about 73000 people were killed.

This earthquake of Pakistan came three days after a powerful quake of magnitude 7.9 struck Nepal leading to devastation. The Nepal saw quake on 25 April 2015, in which more than 4300 people have been killed within the country and in India.
