Sri Lanka’s Parliament voted on 05 January 2010 to extend the emergency in the country. The opposition parties opposed and questioned its relevancy in the post LTTE era. However, the government reasoned that they extended emergency to root out the sleeper cells of LTTE.
The constitution of Sri Lanka allows the parliament to impose emergency and it is valid only for a month. Since August 2005, Sri Lanka is extending emergency. Following the assassination of the Foreign Minister, Lakshman Kadirgamar, in August 2005 the Parliament proclaimed emergency.
The current set of emergency regulations was framed under the Public Security Ordinance act of 1947. The act allowed president to take decisions without normal legislative process and empowered him to restrict basic rights of people granted under the Constitution of Sri Lanka.
