The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) on 31 March 2011 in its report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change warned that Climate Change can have harmful impact on the food production of developing nations. The FAO report state that food production systems and the ecosystems they rely on are highly sensitive to climate change. Changes in precipitation, temperature and related outbreaks of pest and diseases could ham food production in the developing countries. The report pointed out that the Climate Change could disturb the ecosystem services required for agriculture and as a result food security could be threatened from 2050 to 2100.
The FAO report suggested measures for the governments to make sure that government security was not threatened. It recommended that food security should be used as an indicator of vulnerability to climate change. It stressed that greater space should be given to the risks connected to slow-onset affect of climate change and greater attention to the food security risks in the climate change agenda.
The report further suggested that nations should consider food security as a socio-economic safeguard for climate change mitigation measures.
