18 June: Goa Revolution Day

Goa celebrated its revolution day on 18 June 2013. On this occasion, the Governor of the state Bharat Vir Wanchoo led the people of state to Azad Maidan in Panaji to pay homage to the sacred memory of revered martyrs who laid down their life for the liberation of Goa from Portuguese Colonial Rule.

About Goa Revolution Day

On 18 June 1946, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia and Dr. Juliao Menezes asked of the Goans (people of Goa) to stand against the oppression from the Portuguese and to fight for their freedom. They sought to unite the Goans for a common cause and those were for a better life and better future and freedom from oppression. Since then, this day was remembered as the Goa Revolution Day. So 18 June is celebrated as Revolution Day (Kranti Din) to commemorate the saga of the struggle of the people of Goa for freedom.
