Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who also holds the Finance portfolio, presented the state budget on 26 March 2012. The minister proposed a slew of populist measures in the budget. While, he proposed to increase the duty on liquor resulting in hiked liquor price in the state, he proposed to reduce the VAT on petrol to bring the petrol price in the state down to the comfort level of the common masses of the state.
Some of the highlights of Goa Budget 2012-13 are as follows:
• Reduction in the price of petrol by 11 per litre rupees
• 1000 rupees stipend for housewives whose family income is less than 3 lakh rupees
• Unemployment allowance of 3000 rupees to educated unemployed youth
• Increasing old age pension to 2000 rupees per month
• Improving Goa's infrastructure with the construction of bridges, convention centres
