The Income Tax department of India in a Right to Information reply on 19 February 2012 disclosed the tax amount pending with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). According to the department the BCCI owes Rs.371crore to the Income Tax department.
The BCCI's total income for assessment year 2009-10 stood at over Rs.964 crore. The IT Department had demanded a tax of over Rs.413 crore on its gross income for the year 2009-10. But the BCCI paid only Rs.41.91 crore against the total amount of 413 crore. As a result, the BCCI still owes over Rs.371.67 crore to the government as income tax for year 2009-10.
The figures were disclosed by the BCCI under the Right to Information act. An RTI application was filed by activist S.C. Aggarwal seeking the details of tax pending with the BCCI.
The BCCI, one of the world’s richest sporting bodies, used to get income tax exemption as a “charitable organisation” under Section 11 of the I-T Act 196. But now the government has denied this exemption and the BCCI’s earnings now fall under “business income” category.
