The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry announced on Tuesday that Indore will start India's first PPP-model-based green waste processing plant as part of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
For the past seven years, Indore has been named as the country's cleanest city.In a statement, the ministry stated that the program intends to transform the city's waste management by converting green trash into resources.
Green Waste Processing Plant in Indore
"The plant will not only treat green garbage but also produce cash, with the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) receiving approximately Rs 3,000 per tonne in royalties for supplying wood and branches.
The plant, spread across 55,000 square feet in Bicholi Hapsi, will recycle wood and branches to create wooden pellets. These pellets will be used as a substitute for coal, helping to save energy, according to the announcement.
According to the ministry, huge tree branches will be sent to the municipal forest's green waste processing plant and converted into valuable items.
Furthermore, green waste created on the premises of significant institutions will be collected and transported to the facility, with a fixed charge system in place.
Indore’s Growing Green Waste Output
"Every day, the bustling city of Indore produces around 30 tons of green wastewood, branches, leaves, and flowers. This volume can increase to 60 to 70 tons as the seasons change, particularly in the autumn," it added.
In order to turn the city's green waste into something useful and sustainable, Astronomical businesses Private Limited partnered with the Indore Municipal Corporation to launch an ambitious project. The resulting fine sawdust might be utilized in a variety of businesses, according to the ministry.
The ministry stated that sawdust may be converted into environmentally beneficial fuel and utilized to create sturdy packing materials.
PPP Model for Sustainable Indore
The remaining infrastructure, such as sheds, electricity, and water facilities, will be brought up by the private enterprise in the interim. Additionally, the private company will supervise the plant's whole installation and management, guaranteeing seamless operation from beginning to end.
Other private companies have established Meghdoot and sub-grade factories spanning 10,000 to 15,000 square feet in Sirpur.
These facilities are designed to processing garden debris, such as leaves and small twigs, collected from the municipal corporation.
Eco-friendly Initiatives at Indore
Composting is also being done as part of this program, in specifically built compost pits positioned in the municipal gardens.
Wooden pellets made from green waste are used in a variety of industries, including the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), where they provide an environmentally beneficial alternative for energy generation and other purposes.
