India and France on January 28, 2021, launched an initiative for strengthening the cooperation in sustainable development and for working towards the global environment protection.
The Indo-French Year of the Environment has been launched by the French Minister for Ecological Transition Barbara Pompili and Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar. Under it the two countries will be engaged in discussions on the critical areas of collaboration related to environment and other areas.
The Union Environment Minister while welcoming Pompili on her first visit to India, emphasized on the importance of Indo-French alliance in collaborating and working towards the climate change.
He added that both the nations are the two pillars of International Solar Alliance launched by PM Modi and that this partnership towards environment protection will be an example for the world to work more efficiently and effectively towards sustainable development.

Programmes under the initiative:
Different programmes under the newly launched initiative will focus on five main themes:
• Climate Change
• Environmental Protection
• Biodiversity Conservation
• Sustainable urban development
• Development of renewable energies and energy efficiency
Key Highlights:
• From France, the Indo-French year of the environment will be held under the Ministry of Ecological Transition. It will be in close collaboration with Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs along with a support of Embassy of France in Delhi.
• From India, it will be coordinated by the Environment Ministry along with External Affairs Ministry, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, New and Renewable energy ministry and other concerned departments.
• For the Indo-French Year of the Environment, a joint screening committee will also be set up for finalising the calendar of the events.
• Before the launch of the initiative, a meeting was held between Indian and French delegation where they discussed issues related to blue economy, climate change, bio-diversity, cooperation in the field of single use plastic, international solar alliance etc.
Indo-French collaboration in sustainable development:
Barbara Pompili talked about the significance of the partnership towards environment protection and climate change and mentioned that with this partnership both the nations look forward of setting an example for the world. She added that Indian can motivate many nations in the area of sustainable development.
While talking about India’s efforts towards climate change, the Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar informed that the country has already achieved 26% of reduction of emission intensity.
He further informed that as of the 2020 India’s renewable capacity stands at 90 GW which include 38 GW of wind energy and 36 GW of solar energy in the country.
While mentioning the Indo-French cooperation, the Union Minister added that India looks forward towards strengthening the cooperation in sustainable development, in giving greater visibility and increasing the effectiveness of actions in favour of global environment protection.
