India out of Davis Cup after losing to Serbia

India lost the Davis Cup World Group first round tie to defending champions Serbia 1-4.

India lost the Davis Cup World Group first round tie to defending champions Serbia 1-4 after Somdev Devvarman and Karan Rastogi went down in straight sets in the two reverse singles on 6 March 2011.


Rastogi, playing in the dead fifth rubber was defeated by Janko Tipsarevic 0-6, 1-6. Somdev went down 4-6, 2-6, 5-7 to Viktor Troicki in the first reverse singles.


Having been defeated by Serbia India will now be back in the play-off round. They had secured their place in the elite 16 for the second straight year by defeating Brazil 3-2.


Sweden, Spain and Argentina made the quarterfinals after winning leads in their matches against Russia, Belgium and Romania.
