On 19 July 2010, during Indian Defence Minister AK Antony’s two-day visit to Seychelles, India agreed to give aircraft to Seychelles and to assist in capacity building of the armed forces of Seychelles. India also agreed to provide help to Seychelles to carry out maritime and Exclusive Economic Zone surveillance operations. India also promised to provide Seychelles a new Dornier aircraft and two Chetak helicopters from the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.
- Earlier, India had announced 5 million dollar assistance to Seychelles during its President James Alix Michel’s visit to India in June 2010 to strengthen its defence sector.
- Seychelles is an island nation located in Indian Ocean.
- A strong Seychelles can prove a good base for India to carry out anti piracy operations effectively against the sea pirates active in Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean. Therefore, it is needed to assist Seychelles militarily.
