India to host UN wildlife summit in 2020

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on 28 October 2017 announced that India will host the next CMS Conference of the Parties 13 (CMS COP13) in the year 2020. CMS COP is a global wildlife conference.

The announcement was made during the 12th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties 12 (COP12) to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) in Manila, the Philippines.

CMS COP12 was held from 23 – 28 October 2017 and was attended by over 500 delegates from more than 120 countries. The theme of the Conference was ‘Their Future is Our Future - Sustainable Development for Wildlife and People’.

About CMS Conference of the Parties (COP)
• CMS COP is a triennial summit that brings together States through which migratory animals pass through.
• It lays down the legal foundation for internationally coordinated conservation measures for these animals.
