India won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 after defeating Sri Lanka in Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium on 2 April 2011. It was the 10th edition of the world cup cricket. The ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 was hosted by India along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The major sport event started on 19 February 2011 and finished on 2 April 2011. The cricket world cup 2011 was participated by 14 teams. A total of 49 matches were played over a period of total 43 days. India played its first match in the tournament against Bangladesh. Bangladesh co-hosted the cricket world cup for the first time.
In the Cricket World Cup final match, Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first. It scored 274 for six in 50 overs. In reply India, chased the highest total in any World Cup final finishing with 277 for 4 and won the match by 6 wickets with 10 balls remaining. This match was the third final appearance for both India and Sri Lanka in the world cup cricket history. India won the prize money of 3 million US dollars while Sri Lanka got 1.5 million US dollars as prize money. The coach of India cricket team is Gary Kirsten while its captain is Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Kumara Sangakkara was the captain of Sri Lankan side.
Indian Cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was adjudged Man of the Match and Yuvraj Singh Player of the Tournament. Yuvrah Singh took a total of 15 wickets and scored 362 runs. Simon Taufel and Aleem Dar were chosen to umpire the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 final between India and Sri Lanka. Jeff Crowe was the match referee in the final of cricket World Cup 2011.
The First Semifinal match of the cricket world cup was played between Sri Lanka and New Zealand on 29 March 2011 at R.Premadasa stadium which was won by Sri Lanka.
The Second Semifinal match was played between India and Pakistan between India and Pakistan on 30 March 2011 at Punjab Cricket Association, Mohali.
With this world cup cricket 2011 victory India became the first country ever to win the cricket world cup on their soil and only the third team after West Indies and Australia to win it more than once. Australia has won the cricket world cup maximum times. It has won cricket World Cup for a record 4 times in 1987, 1999, 2003 and 2007.
It was the second time India won the cricket world cup and after a gap of 28 years. India had won the Cricket World Cup for the first time in 1983 in England after defeating West Indies in final at Lord’s stadium. Kapil Dev was the captain of Indian Cricket team in 1983 and it was the third edition of the World Cup Cricket. Mohinder Amarnath was chosen Man of the Match for the cricket world cup final match against West Indies in 1983.
