New Delhi: Final preparations are being made for Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto's visit to India later this month. He is visiting India in order to attend Republic Day on January 26 as India’s Chief Guest.
Along with President Subianto, a 350-member Indonesian military contingent will also join the grand parade on Kartavya Path. Last month, the Indonesian President inspected the troops in Jakarta who will participate in the parade.
Significance of Prez Subianto’s Visit
This invitation is in line with the continuous initiatives to improve bilateral relations between India and Indonesia, especially in the areas of defense and strategic cooperation. President Subianto's visit is anticipated to boost the partnership, particularly in the area of connectivity, as India commemorates ten years of its "Act East" program.
Indonesia's Ties with India's Republic Day
In 1950, when President Sukarno was the chief guest, it was the first time an Indonesian president had attended India's Republic Day. Since then, numerous Indonesian presidents have received invitations to attend India's Republic Day parade as the main guests. This covers President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi) 2018 visit and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's 2011 visit. In 2018, President Widodo attended India's Republic Day celebrations along with other ASEAN leaders to mark 25 years of the India-ASEAN partnership.
High-Level Visits Between India and ASEAN Nations
Leaders from ASEAN nations and India have made a number of significant visits in the past six months. In August 2024, Vietnamese Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim traveled to India. PM Modi visited Brunei and Singapore in September 2024. He then went to Laos for the 19th East Asia Summit and the 21st ASEAN-India Summit in October 2024, where he presented a 10-point plan to improve ties between India and ASEAN. Droupadi Murmu, the president of India, had visited Fiji, Timor Leste.
