International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations observed

The day was created by the United Nations in recognition of the important work and values of human rights crusader Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, of El Salvador, who was assasinated on 24 March 1980.

24 March: International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims

The International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims was observed on 24 March 2016 across the world.

To mark the occasion, all Member States of the UN, international organizations and civil society organizations conducted awareness programmes on the importance of protection of human rights.

The day was created by the United Nations General Assembly on 21 December 2010 with the following objectives

• To honour the memory of victims of gross and systematic human rights violations and promote the importance of the right to truth and justice

• To pay tribute to those who have devoted their lives to, and lost their lives in, the struggle to promote and protect human rights for all

• To recognize, in particular, the important work and values of human rights crusader Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero, of El Salvador, who was assasinated on 24 March 1980
