6 April: International Day of Sport for Development and Peace
The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace was observed across the world on April 6, 2018 with an aim to recognise the growing contribution of sport to the realisation of development and peace in its promotion of tolerance and respect.
Sport plays an important role as a promoter of peace and economic development in different geographical, cultural and political contexts. It acts as a powerful tool to promote peace and understanding by bringing people together across the boundaries, cultures and religions.
When was the day proclaimed?
The Day commemorates the date of the inauguration of the first Olympic games of the modern era in Athens, Greece in 1896.
The United Nations General Assembly decided to proclaim 6 April as the International Day of the Sport for the Development and the Peace on 23 August 2013 through its resolution A/RES/67/296. The day was first celebrated in the year 2014.
The adoption of the day by the UN signifies the positive influence of sport on the advancement of human, social and economic development.
