Jaish al-Fatah: A coalition of armed forces fighting against the Syrian Government to capture Idlib

Jaish al-Fatah or Fattah Army was in news because the militant group captured Idlib city in Syria on 28 March 2015.

The city is strategically located on the highway which connects country’s largest city Aleppo with the Syrian capital Damascus.

The group is a coalition of seven armed factions formed on 24 March 2015. The aim of the group is to capture Idlib from the Syrian government. Ahrar al-sham and Nusra Front are important partners in the group.

The armed conflict that began in March 2011 between the forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and those opposed to his rule has so far killed around 2 lakh civilians and 7.6 million people have been internally displaced with another 3.9 million seeking refuge in neighbouring countries of Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq.
