Justice Sanjiv Khanna was sworn in as India's 51st Chief Justice (CJI) on November 11th. The oath was administered by President Droupadi Murmu during a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan.
In addition to former Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, the ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Justice Sanjeev Khanna: 51st Chief Justice
Justice Sanjiv Khanna has officially become the Chief Justice of India following the retirement of former CJI D Y Chandrachud on Sunday, November 10.
In his farewell speech on Friday, November 8, Justice Chandrachud shared his confidence in Justice Khanna’s leadership, praising him as “dignified, steady, and deeply committed to justice.”
SC Website Shows Justice Khanna as New CJI
Soon after Justice Sanjiv Khanna took the oath as Chief Justice of India, the Supreme Court website updated his profile as the new CJI. Justice D Y Chandrachud’s profile was moved to the section for former CJIs. This is a routine update whenever a new Chief Justice is sworn in.
Justice Khanna Tenure for 183 Days
Justice Khanna will have a short term of just over six months, retiring on May 13, 2025. Due to this brief tenure, he told TOI that he would not move into the official CJI residence at 5, Krishna Menon Marg.
Who is Justice Khanna?
Justice Khanna, who was born on May 14, 1960, started practicing law in 1983 as an advocate for the Delhi Bar Council. He quickly expanded his knowledge of taxation, arbitration, business law, environmental law, and constitutional law.
After the retirement of Justice Chandrachud, Justice Khanna is the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court of India
The Center formally announced Justice Sanjiv Khanna's appointment on October 24 after former CJI D Y Chandrachud suggested his name as his successor on October 17.
