As the IPL 2025 auction approaches in December 2024, significant changes are being observed within the support staff of various teams. According to recent media reports, Rajasthan Royals’ Director Kumar Sangakkara is in discussions with senior officials of Kolkata Knight Riders.
Speculation is growing that Sangakkara may leave his role at Rajasthan Royals to join Kolkata Knight Riders as their mentor for the upcoming season.
Will Sangakkara Replace Gautam Gambhir?
According to sources, Kumar Sangakkara, the director of cricket for the Rajasthan Royals, is in talks to become the next mentor for the Kolkata Knight Riders.
After Gautam Gambhir left the three-time winner to become the new head coach of India, the reigning champions are searching for a replacement. The search is expected to end now, with Kumar Sangakkara taking up the role by next week.
Along with Gambhir, Abhishek Nayar, the former assistant coach of KKR, also joined the Indian national team. Ryan ten Doeschate has also become a member of Gambhir's support team. KKR will have to search for other additional staff as well.
Rahul Dravid Might Replace Sangakkara
Dravid has reportedly been signed by the Rajasthan Royals to serve as head coach of the IPL 2025 team, according to a recent report from Cricbuzz. According to the sources, Vikram Rathour will work under Dravid as his assistant coach.
As India's batting coach during their victory at the T20 World Cup in 2024, Rathour is seen as an asset in the cricket world.
Sangakkara’s Performance as RR’s Mentor
Even though they won the first IPL tournament, the Rajasthan Royals—who are still trying to win their second IPL trophy—performed admirably well under the mentorship of Sangakkara. They even made it to the IPL 2022 final match before losing to the Gujarat Titans in the finals.
Rajasthan Royals finished third in the just concluded season after placing seventh in the IPL 2021, then fifth in the IPL 2023.
