The Delhi Cabinet on 21 November 2011 approved conferring of lifetime achievement awards for 2011-12 on sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, renowned Hindustani vocalist Girija Devi and noted author Ruskin Bond.
In the past, the Sahitya Kala Parishad under the Delhi government conferred the lifetime achievement award, which was instituted in 2004-05 on eminent personalities like M. S. Subbulakshmi, Ebrahim Alkazi, Kapila Vatsyayan, Zohra Sehgal, Bhimsen Joshi, Habib Tanvir and Vishwanathan Anand.
About the winners
Amjad Ali Khan is an acclaimed sarod player who was awarded India's second highest civilian honour Padma Vibhushan in 2001.
Girija Devi, known as the queen of Thumri, is an eminent Indian classical vocalist representing the Banaras Gharana. She was awarded the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan and was also bestowed with Sangeet Natak Academy Award and Sangeet Natak Academy Fellowship.
Ruskin Bond is an Indian author of British descent. He is considered to be an icon among Indian writers and Indian authors. He was earlier honoured with the Sahiya Academy Award for English writing for his short stories collection. He was also awarded Padma Shri for contribution to children's literature.
