India will soon get its first indeginous bullet trains. Integral Coach Factory (ICF) has given state-owned BEML a ₹866.87 crore contract to design, produce, and commission India's first domestic bullet train system. This project will feature two high-speed trainsets, each with eight cars, designed for a test speed of 280 km/h. The trains will operate at a speed of 250 km/h, marking a significant milestone in India's high-speed rail development.
The trains, which are being constructed at BEML's Bengaluru factory, are scheduled to be introduced by late 2026. This is a part of a larger initiative to improve India's rail network.
Made in India Bullet Trains
Following the failure of negotiations to acquire Japanese bullet trains, the Indian Railways decided to construct their own bullet trains. The trains that BEML is developing may or may not be for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor.
The trainsets will be produced at BEML's rail coach factory in Bengaluru. They are planned to be delivered by the end of 2026.
According to BEML, the completely air-conditioned trains will have rotatable and reclining seats, special accommodations for those with limited mobility, and onboard infotainment devices.
