The President of Mali, Amadou Toumani Toure resigned on 8 April 2012 following the agreement signed with the mediators. He was in hiding since the Army coup against him in March 2012. The speaker of the Malian parliament Diouncounda Traore will be the interim president.
The northern part of Mali was captured by a mix of separatist Tuareg-led rebels and Islamist fighters recently and security of the nation was in danger. That is why a coup was staged against President Toure. The insurgent group is called National Movement for Liberation of Azawad. They have declared an independent state of Azawad.
Amadou Toumani Toure was President of Mali from 2002 to 2012. He had overthrown former president Moussa Traore in a March 1991 military coup. After that he handed power to civilian authorities in June 1992 and entered politics as a civilian in 2002 and won the Presidential election.
