Mayookha Johny’s 14.02 metres, in her sixth and final jump in the women’s triple jump category won her bronze in the final leg of the Asian Athletic Grand Prix in Wujiang, China on 29 May 2011.
Mayookha not only broke MA Prajusha’s national record of 13.72m but bettered the effort by one foot, becoming the first Indian woman to cross the 14m mark. Mayookha finished behind two Chinese Xie Limei (14.16m) and Li Yanmei (14.05m).
At the Indian Grand Prix held at Patiala in August, Mayookha had broken Anju Bobby George’s seven-year-old national record by a centimeter when she leaped to 13.68.
The bronze she won in the final leg of the Asian Athletic Grand Prix was her first medal under her new coach Shyam Kumar, a former long jump champion.
In the women’s discus throw, Seema Antil won bronze with 51.45m. She had won silver in the previous two legs.
Ghamanda Ram won his third successive silver in men’s 800m race with an effort of 1:49.45. Sajeesh Joseph (1:49.74) took the bronze.
