Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) on 21 December 2010 introduced its 4X4 off-roader, Thar CRDe in the Indian market. The vehicle is targeted at the off-roading enthusiasts and retro look seekers. The Thar CRDe is an evolved version of the Mahindra CJ340, the MM540, the Classic and the Legend and is a BS-IV variant. The vehicle has a power steering as a standard fitment. Thar CRDe is also available with a DI engine as a base variant which will be positioned as a lifestyle vehicle for the rural market with both 2-wheel and 4-wheel drive options. The cabin of the vehicle can seat seven while two rear bench seats can be folded to create a massive luggage area. Thar is a manual 4X4 machine with a powerful CRDe engine 105 BHP and drive by wire technology. The BS-IV variant is priced at Rs.5.99 lakh (ex-Delhi) while the BS-III variant will be priced at Rs.4.47 lakh (ex-Jaipur). Thar will be launched in Delhi, Chandigarh, Bangalore, Mangalore and Jaipur by end-December 2010 and the rest of India by January 2011.
M&M which was initially set up to make general purpose utility vehicles began with assembly of the iconic CJ340 in India. M&M later branched out into the manufacture of utility and light commercial vehicles.
