MNRE sanctioned 20000 Solar Lanterns for Flood Affected People of Uttarakhand

Ministry of New and Renewable Energy sanctioned funds for 20000 solar lanterns for flood affected people of Uttarakhand.

The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy on 8 July 2013 sanctioned central financial assistance of 4.4 crore rupees for distribution of 20000 solar lanterns in the flood affected areas of Uttarakhand. The full cost of the lanterns, which would be distributed among the people in the flood affected areas of the state will be met by the Ministry itself. Each lantern costs approximately 2200 rupees.

The announcement came as a follow up of the relief and re-establishment plan after the Himalayan State was struck by the natural Calamity on 15 June 2013. The announcement on the distribution of the solar lanterns was made by the Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy; Dr. Farooq Abdullah after the Ministry received a request from the State Government of Uttarakhand to provide Solar Lanterns, in principle.

Record of distribution of Solar Lanterns by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, in recent past:

• 14000 lanterns in 2009-10 to West Bengal, for  Cyclone Aila affected people of the state
• 1000 solar lanterns in Leh during 2010-11 to people of flash flood affected areas
• 14900 solar lanterns in Sikkim during 2011-12 to the earth quake affected people
