State government of Sikkim on 20 January 2015 inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with governments of the Netherlands and Thailand for development of floriculture in the state. This deal will help the state to reach out to the international market.
Features of the MoU
• Governments of the Netherland and Thailand will provide expertise and technology to develop hybrid Sikkim’s Cymbidium and other orchids and also cut flowers
• They will help the state in marketing and transportation of flowers
Floriculture in Sikkim
Geographical and environmental conditions of Sikkim are quite conducive for development of floriculture at a higher altitude. Apart from this, Sikkim’s model of organic farming and cultivation gives longevity of up to 90 days to orchid flowers and up to 10-20 days in case of cut flowers.
