The Department of Pension and Pensioners' Welfare (DoPPW) has launched a new scheme for central government pensioners aged 80 and above. This scheme introduced an extra pension called the compassionate allowance for the old age pensioners.
New guidelines have been issued to make it easier for retired employees who are 80 years old or above to access these additional benefits.
Additional Pension Will Start From
The extra pension will start from the first day of the month in which the pensioner turns the specified age.
For example, if a pensioner turns 80 on March 15, they will start receiving the additional pension from March 1.
Pension/Compassionate Allowance Increase Based on Age
For pensioners aged 80 to 85, the pension will increase by 20% of the basic pension or compassionate allowance. For those aged 85 to 90, the increase will be 30% of the basic pension or compassionate allowance.
See the table below to understand how pension amounts increase with age:
Age Range | Additional Pension/Compassionate Allowance (%) |
80 to 85 years | 20% |
85 to 90 years | 30% |
90 to 95 years | 40% |
95 to 100 years | 50% |
100 years and older | 100% |
Purpose of Compassionate Allowance
The purpose of the compassionate allowance is to help the elderly deal with the growing expense of living, which frequently rises as people age.
The goal of this program is to give senior persons a respectable quality of life as they age while also acknowledging their contributions.
