Highlights of the MoU
• Nokia and Airtel will together look at network evolution to 5G, exploring operations, cost-effectiveness, quality and reliability.
• Nokia will work with BSNL by offering new products that plug into 5G technology as proof-of-concept demonstrations for the Indian market.
• The MoU will help BSNL to draw a framework for transition from the current network to a futuristic 5G network.

In addition to this, Nokia is setting up a 5G experience zone in Bengaluru in order to assess the requirements of the technology.

Presently, there is a no deployment standard for 5G services. However, International Telecommunications Union defined minimum requirements for 5G technology which states that 5G offering will have peak download rate of 20Gbps with a minimum of 1Gbps for workers on a single floor.

The aim of this partnership is to upgrade the existing 4G network in India to make way for better 5G services in the country. This would be the jump off point for Nokia as the 5G technology is expected to commercially roll out between 2019 to 2020.

This move will also open up the country to the potential of extreme high-speed wireless broadband and the ability to support the future network demands of connected devices associated with the Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart Cities.
