The painting by Fernand Leger, which was owned by Madonna sell for 7.2 million US dollar in New York on 7 May 2013 at the Sotheby's auction house. The painting called Three Women at the Red Table dates from 1921. The proceeds from this sale will fund Madonna's Ray of Light Foundation that supports the projects of girls’ education in South Asia and Middle East.
The sale was a part of Sotheby's sale of Impressionist as well as modern art which took over 230 million US dollar. In the meanwhile, the painting Les Pommes, a still life by French artist Paul Cezanne claimed the highest price, i.e., 41.6 million US dollar.
L'Amazone, a portrait of French socialite Baroness Marguerite de Hasse de Villers by Amedeo Modigliani, was sold for 25.9 million US dollar. A Pablo Picasso sculpture of his young muse Sylvette went on sale for 13.6 million US dollar.
In the same auction in 2012, the version of Edvard Munch's The Scream was sold for a world record price of 119.9 million US dollar.
