Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan made history by winning the country’s first-ever track and field medal at the Olympics, taking gold in the men’s javelin final in Paris.
The 27-year-old Arshad Nadeem surpassed defending champion Neeraj Chopra of India and set a new Olympic record at the Stade de France on July 8.
Pakistan’s First Win in Athletics
Nadeem celebrated after his second throw, which set a new Olympic record with a remarkable distance of 92.97 meters—the best throw in the world this year.
This was the first time that Pakistan won a gold medal in an individual athletic event. Previously the country has won three gold medals in Olympic history, all in field hockey, with victories in 1960, 1968, and 1984. However, Pakistan has won eight Olympic medals in total, with six in men's hockey and one each in men's wrestling and boxing.
Nadeem's achievement is especially significant as it is Pakistan's first Olympic medal after a long period of time. The last time Pakistan won an Olympic medal was in 1992 when the men's hockey team earned bronze in Barcelona, Spain.
Neeraj Chopra’s Season Best Throw
Neeraj Chopra, who was leading in the qualifiers and was the favorite to win, wasn't in top form. His best throw was 89.45 meters, but it was his only valid attempt as he fouled on his other five tries.
Grenada's Anderson Peters secured the bronze with a throw of 88.54 meters, a moment of redemption for the two-time world champion after missing the final at the Tokyo Games three years ago.
