Former defence secretary Pradeep Kumar was sworn-in as the new Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) on 14 July 2011. He replaced P J Thomas, whose appointment was struck down by the Supreme Court in March 2011. The appointment came at a time when Thomas moved the Delhi High Court, demanding that the new appointment be stayed till his own case reached a conclusion.
1972 batch IAS officer of Haryana cadre, Pradeep Kumar was sworn in before President Pratibha Patil for a term of three years.
Kumar was chosen for the CVC's post unanimously by a panel comprising Manmohan Singh, Swaraj and home minister P Chidambaram.
The Supreme Court had on 3 March 2011 quashed the appointment of Thomas, citing a pending chargesheet in a corruption case against him in Kerala. The post lay vacant ever since.
