Maldives police used tear gas and batons to break up a protest on 1 May 2011 demanding President Mohamad Nasheed's resignation. Dozens of people were injured and many arrested. Thousands of protesters converged on the capital, Male last night to rally against economic hardship, alleged government mismanagement and wasteful spending. 

The Maldives is made up of 1200 islands. It is located in the Indian Ocean and is entirely dependent on imports. Tourism is one of its major sources of revenue.
