Recommendation for the Completion of Tejas

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defense on 15 April 2010 recommended that the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) ‘Tejas' project should be made operational within the stipulated timeframe without further cost overruns. The committee insisted that the problem with the engine should be expeditiously sorted out either by importing it or persisting with the existing one.

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defense on 15 April 2010 recommended that the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) ‘Tejas' project should be made operational within the stipulated timeframe without further cost overruns. The committee insisted that the problem with the engine should be expeditiously sorted out either by importing it or persisting with the existing one. Already Rs 13000 crore have been sanctioned for this project that begab 27 years ago in 1983. The first phase of the project was completed in April 2004 incurrina a cost of Rs 2188 crore.  The second phase was expected to be completed by 31 Dec 2008 and a sum of 3301.87 crore was sanctioned for the same. The project was delayed and is now expected to be completed by 2012 incurring an additional cost of Rs.2475.78 crore.
