Religious Freedom for Hindus, Christians and Shia Muslims Deteriorating in Pakistan: Report

The Report by independent American group called US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) in the month of July 2013 revealed that the Hindus living in Pakistan were the worst victims of rape. It was revealed that in last 18 months, there were seven incidents of rape on Hindu girls in Pakistan.

Apart from this, it was revealed by the report of USCIRF that two Hindus were murdered as well as four injured in overall 16 attacks that took place in Pakistan. In the targeted attacks in Pakistan, three Hindus were murdered. As far as the Sikhs were concerned, it was found that there were overall three cases of attacks on the Sikhs living in Pakistan. This eventually led to death of one Sikh person.

The report also additionally revealed that in past 18 months, there were 203 incidents of sectarian violence which led to 1800 casualties, which also included 717 deaths. Out of these deaths, 635 dead were the Shia Muslims.

From January 2012 to June 2013, there has been a considerable rise in the religious and sectarian violence in Pakistan and during this period, the worst affected community was Shia.

The USCIRF report led to creation of the factsheet which was prepared under Pakistan Religious Violence Project. This project kept into consideration the attacks which took place publicly against the religious communities. The report declared that the religious freedom environment for a few sects such as Ahmadiyas, Christians and Hindus was already poor and it was deteriorating even more.

There were overall 77 attacks on the Shia, which led to 635 deaths as well as serious injuries to 834. Shia community also suffered because of 18 bomb blasts as well as 46 targeted shootings.

Christians are the second largest community in Pakistan and they were attacked 37 times, leaving 11 people killed and 36 injured. Five Christian girls were also raped.
