The Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change on 22 February 2011 approved 46000 crore rupees National Mission for Green India. The Green India mission is aimed at increasing forest cover in the country by five million hectares by 2020. The mission is also aimed at improving the livelihood of three million forest dependant households and increase carbon sequestration of 50-60 million tonnes by 2020. The mission is to be implemented by the Union Environment ministry of India under the National Action Plan on Climate Change announced in 2009.
