Salman Taseer, the liberal governor of Pakistan’s largest province, Punjab, was shot and killed by his bodyguard in Islamabad’s upscale Kohsar Market on 4 January 2011. The guard identified as Mumtaz Hussain Qadari stated that he killed the governor because of his liberal and progressive views. Taseer’s recent public endorsement of a pardon for a Christian woman sentenced to death for blasphemy had angered the fanatic Qadari. Taseer who belonged to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was a prominent liberal among the Liberals and had recently moved to amend the draconian blasphemy law enacted during the rule of Gen Zia ul-Haq. However his party, PPP dropped the move after pressure from hardline Muslim groups whose support it needs to stay in power.
