Sharad Yadav was unanimously re-elected as the national President of Janata Dal (United) for third time in a row, on 14 April 2013. Sharad Yadav, 65, announced keeping the NDA alliance intact.
It is important to note that Sharad Yadav’s election came after the amendment to party constitution. Earlier, the party did not enable the incumbent person for getting more than two terms as the party chief.
Sharad Yadav’s name was proposed by 20 state units of the party which included Bihar. He became the JD(U) president in 2006. He succeeded George Fernandes, who was elected as JD(U)’s president in 2003. Even though the term of party president of JD(U) is for two years, but he remained the chief till 2009 and was re-elected to this post.
Sharad Yadav is the four-time MP from Madhepura Lok Sabha seat in Bihar. He has remained active in politics for past 4 decades. He first became the MP from Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur constituency in 1977. He also won the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award for 2012.
