The alliance of Shiromani Akali Dal and Bhartiya Janata Party emerged victorious in Punjab Assembly Polls 2012. The alliance which claimed 68 seats in the election is all set to form the government in the state.
The verdict of elections held at 117 assembly seats of Punjab came out on 6 March 2012.
The tally of BJP, despite the victory, came down to 12 from 19 in 2007. Shiromani Akali Dal came out with flying colours as the party added 8 seats in their previous tally of 48 and ended up winning 56 seats this time.
Congress the other major party in the state managed to win 46 seats, in a 117 seats assembly. Congress, however, with 40.11% of total vote share was voted more than the SAD-BJP combine which claimed 34.75% of total voting in the state.
The current verdict also holds a historical significance as the electorates of Punjab contrary to their history of voting anti-incumbency voted in the favour of incumbent SAD-BJP government. The alliance on its way to reclaim the power became the first incumbent government in Punjab to get a consecutive second term in the government, ever since the state was reorganised in 1966.
As per the notification issued by the Election Commission of India, elections for 117 assembly seats in Punjab were held on 30 January 2012. Out of total 117 seats, 34 were reserved for the SC candidates.
