Singapore approves breathalyser test to detect COVID-19 in 1-minute

Singapore authorities on May 24, 2021, provisionally approved a COVID-19 breathalyser test that determines if someone is COVID positive in less than a minute.

Breathonix, a local startup from the National University of Singapore (NUS), stated that the company in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH), Singapore will run a deployment trial of the technology at one of the city-state’s border points with Malaysia.

The Breathonix breathalyser test will be conducted with the compulsory COVID-19 rapid antigen test.

Last year, the company reported 90 per cent accuracy in a pilot clinical trial of the breathalyser test held in Singapore.

The company also informed that breathalyser was the first system to obtain provisional authorization. The websites of the Health Sciences Authority also confirmed the news of the approval.

Breathonix further said that it is having talks with local and international organizations to adopt the system. The Netherlands and Indonesia have also launched similar breath tests.

What is COVID-19 Breathalyser Test?

•COVID-19 Breathalyzer test is a diagnostic medical testing device developed to detect coronavirus infection.

•COVID-19 Breathalyser test developed by Breathonix, a local startup from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has shown results within a minute with 90 per cent or more accuracy.

•The breathalyser test is conducted along with the compulsory COVID-19 rapid antigen test.

•A person blows into a disposable one-way mouthpiece for breath sampling. Special software analyzes the Volatile Organic Compounds in a person’s breath for the presence of coronavirus.

•If a person’s breath result returns positive, he or she must undergo Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) COVID-19 swab test.

•The breathalyser test is available between S$5 ($3.76) to S$20 ($15.03) each.
