The Sri Lankan cabinet on 13 December 2010 decided to scrap the Tamil version of its National Anthem. As per the cabinet decision, only the original Sinhalese-language version of the song will be sung publicly. The Tamil version of Sri Lanka’s anthem used to be sung in Tamil schools and public offices and in areas of Tamil majority. The constitution of Sri Lanka recognises Sinhalese version of its national anthem but unclear about the Tamil version. The decision to scrap Tamil version of its national anthem could widen the gap between Sinhalese and Tamil communities of Sri Lanka.
