Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh on 1 July 2013 approved the appointment of Sujata Singh as the Next Foreign Secretary of India. Sujata Singh of 59 years at present is serving as the envoy to Germany. She will succeed Ranjan Mathai as Foreign Secretary, who is due to retire on 31 July 2013. Due to retire in July 2014, Singh has got an extension of two year in her service period.
About Sujata Singh
• Sujata Singh is the IFS officer of 1976 batch
• She is the third women to head the foreign services after Chokila Iyer and Nirupama Rao
• She has served as an under-secretary to Nepal from 1982-1985 and was later posted in Europe that includes Italy and France
• She is the daughter of T V Rajeshwar, the former Intelligence Bureau chief and wife of Sanjay Singh, former secretary (east), who retired in April 2013
