Supreme Court of India in its judgment on 5 May 2010 directed all the states to hike the salaries of all the judicial officers with effect from 01 January 2010. A bench including chief justice K.G.Balkrishnan, Justice Deepak Verma and Justice B.S.Chauhan delivered the judgment after hearing the plea from the All India Judges Association. Supreme Court asked the states to implement the recommendations by justice E.Padmanabhan committee on salary hike.

Some states like Jammu Kashmir and Assam had contended that implementing the recommendations made by the committee would impose extra financial burden on them.
The Supreme Court rejected their plea on the basis that it is for states to carry out expenditure. They can do either by taking help from Finance Commission or Government of India.
