The deaths of 18 lakh girl children in the past two decades in India is linked to domestic violence against their mother according to the research published in the second half of January 2011 and jointly carried out by Harvard School of public Health and the National Institute for research in reproductive health in Mumbai.
The research team after examining 1.58 lakh births between 1985 and 2005 found that domestic violence against the women increased the risk of death among girl children in both the first year and the first five years of life.
The family in which the woman is physically abused by her husband and neglected by the family members it is unlikely that the girl child will get proper nutrition or the medical attention in contrast to the male child.
The study done by the research team was published in the journal, Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.
