UNESCO Asia‐Pacific Heritage Awards 2014 announced

UNESCO Asia‐Pacific Awards 2014 for Cultural Heritage Conservation were announced in Bangkok on 2 September 2014.  Esplanade House & Shri Sakhargad Nivasini Devi Temple Complex bagged the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards from India.

Out of 46 entries a total of 14 projects have been recognized for UNESCO Asia‐Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation 2014.

The award is an annual recognition of conservation projects by non-state actors across five categories: Award of Excellence, Award of Distinction, Award of Merit, Honourable Mention and Jury Commendation for Innovation.

Awards for 2014
Award of Distinction: Saryazd Citadel, Yazd, Islamic Republic of Iran
The award recognized the commitment made by private sector partnerships to protect a unique historic desert complex, while providing significant socio‐economic benefits for the local community through renewed employment opportunities.

About Esplanade House

Esplanade House is residence of the founder of the Tata Empire, Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata in Mumbai. Esplanade House, built in the Renaissance Revival architectural style, is a testimony to the role merchant princes played in the growth of the city in the 19th century.

About Shri Sakhargad Niwasini Devi Temple complex

The Shri Sakhargad Niwasini Devi Temple complex is located in Kinhai village near Satara, Pune. It was restored by the city-based Kimaya architects, headed by conservationist Kiran Kalamdani.

About the UNESCO Asia‐Pacific Heritage for Cultural Heritage Conservation Awards
The Awards was established in 2000 with the aim to encourage other property owners to undertake conservation projects within their communities, either independently or by seeking public‐private partnerships.

The UNESCO Asia‐Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation programme recognizes the efforts of private individuals and organizations that have successfully restored and conserved structures and buildings of heritage value in the region.

The conserved or restored heritage structure, place or property must be over 50 years old and for settlements and landscapes, the essential historic elements must be more than 50 years old to consider for these awards.
