The bald eagle has officially been declared the national bird of the US. The declaration came after President Joe Biden signed a law on Christmas Eve.
With its remarkable brown body, yellow beak, and white head, the bald eagle is a symbol of American power.
Historical Significance of Bald Eagle for America
Since 1782, the bird has been a part of the United States' national emblem, appearing on the Great Seal of the United States, which is used on official American documents. It was selected because of its majestic beauty and because it stands for courage and freedom.
However, the bill was not officially recognized as the national bird until last week, when it was passed by Congress and sent to Biden's desk for signature.
Bald Eagle: National Bird of US
Jack Davis, co-chair of the National Bird Initiative at the National Eagle Center, said in a statement that the bald eagle was mistakenly referred to as the national bird for almost 250 years. "But now the title is official, and no bird is more deserving."
Debate Over the Bald Eagle's Status
However, not everyone's opinion is in agreement with the decision regarding the bald eagle's national status.
Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers, argued that the animal was a "bird of bad moral character" and objected to its selection as the national symbol. However, not every member of Congress agreed with Franklin.
US’s National Bird: Native to North America
According to the US Department of Veteran Affairs, bald eagles, like other eagles around the world, have long been regarded by many as representations of bravery, strength, independence, and immortality. Furthermore, the bald eagle was unique to North America, unlike other eagles.
Minnesota’s Role in Granting this Status
Minnesota lawmakers led the effort to officially designate the bald eagle as the national bird, with the state being home to one of the largest bald eagle populations, according to Senator Amy Klobuchar.
The bald eagle is protected by the National Emblem Act of 1940, which bans its sale or hunting. Once endangered, the bird's population has significantly recovered since 2009.
This bill was among 50 signed into law by President Joe Biden on Christmas Eve, including one addressing anti-hazing to prevent violence and deaths on university campuses.
