Senior Congress leader Vijay Bahuguna sworn in as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on 14 March 2012. Bahuguna, a Congress MP, is son of late Congress leader Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna. Bahuguna was administered the oath by governer Mararet Alva.

 

Bahuguna, who was former judge of Allahabad and Bombay High Courts, is a second-term MP from Tehri Garhwal. He is also the vice president of Uttarakhand Congress.

Vijay Bahuguna is the sixth CM of Uttarakhand, the state which was carved out of UP in year 2000. His father Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna had also been the CM of Uttar Pradesh. His sister Rita Bahuguna Joshi is UP Congress president.

Harish Rawat, the other top contender of chief ministeship, however, threatened the government to quit if he is not made the Chief Minister. Rawat, a five time Congress MP was party's pricipal candidate for the top position of the state.

Congress, by winning 32 seats in 70-member assembly, had emerged as the single largest party in the assembly elections held in February 2012.
