Mohan Charan Majhi: The new Chief Minister of Odisha is finally announced. Four-time MLA and tribal face of the party Mohan Charan Majhi is to be the next CM of the state. After prominent state leaders like Dharmendra Pradhan and Jual Oram were dragged into the Council of Ministers in the Modi Government, the BJP chose a relatively unknown and fresh face to represent Odisha. Additionally, the party has selected KV Singh Deo and Pravati Parida as deputy CMs of the state.
"Delighted to announce that Shri Mohan Charan Manjhi has been elected unanimously as the leader of Odisha BJP Legislature Party. He is a young and dynamic party karyakarta who will take the state forward on road to progress and prosperity as the new Chief Minister of Odisha. Many congratulations to him," said Rajnath Singh, BJP observer in Odisha.
The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) swept to power in Odisha for the first time with 78 of the 147 seats won in the recently concluded assembly elections. On Wednesday, June 12, the new Chief Minister will take the oath of office. The party has made its decision on the leader of the state. The sworn-in ceremony is scheduled to take place this Wednesday, June 12, 2024.
Who is the New CM of Odisha?
BJP has chosen tribal leader Mohan Charan Majhi as the new Chief Minister of Odisha. Having served as Keonjhar's MLA four times before, Mr. Majhi is a seasoned politician whose organizational abilities and commitment to public service helped him win the race for CM chair. At the age of 52, he was the youngest of the front-runners in the race.
“Though I was confident that he would be chosen as a minister after the BJP won the majority, I never thought that he would become the CM. Whatever he has got is because of the blessings of Lord Jagannath. I am very proud of him,” said Priyanka Marndi, wife of Mohan Charan Majhi to media when asked about her husband becoming the CM of maiden BJP government.
Mohan Charan Majhi’s Political Journey
Belonging to a tribal community, Mohan Charan Majhi is a classic example of a grassroot leader who climbed the ladder with hard work and perseverance.
From 1997 to 2000, he served the people as a Sarapanch before making his assembly debut. Additionally, he also was a member of the Standing Committee of S.C. & S.T. under the ORV Act. Majhi was the State Adivasi Morcha's (BJP) secretary as well.
From 2005 till 2009, when the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the BJP formed a coalition government, Majhi served as the government's Deputy Chief Whip. The four-time MLA is renowned for his organizational ability and commitment to public service.
Mohan Charan Majhi Educational Qualification
As per the election affidavit submitted by him, Mohan Charan Majhi completed his higher secondary education at Jhumpura High School in 1987. He further completed his intermediate education at Anadapur College in 1990.
He graduated with an LLB from Dhenkanal Law College and a BA from Chandra Sekhar College, Champua in Keonjhar.

Before coming into politics Majhi was a school teacher. Leaders of the Odisha BJP who personally know Mohan Charan Majhi, said that the tribal leader had a difficult childhood whiloe growing up in an isolated village of Raikala in Keonjhar.
Majhi taught at Saraswati Shishu Mandir for a few years after completing his graduation from Chandra Sekhar College in Champua, Keonjhar, before going into politics. He also has a history with the RSS and has been connected to the Sangh for a very long period.
