Narendra Modi has decided on his first list of cabinet ministers. In a massive ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday evening, 72 ministers, including Narendra Modi, took the oath of office. Out of the individuals that were sworn in alongside Prime Minister Modi, there are thirty Cabinet Ministers, five Ministers of State with Independent Charge, and thirty-six Ministers of State.
The new Council of Ministers now has seven female members. Two women ministers have been admitted into the Union Cabinet out of the seven who took their oath on Sunday. This is four less than the outgoing council of ministers. Annpurna Devi and Nirmala Sitharaman took the oath of office as cabinet ministers.
Women Ministers in Modi 3.0
1. Nirmala Sitharaman: Cabinet Mister (BJP)
The Karnataka MP for the Rajya Sabha and two-time Union minister, Nirmala Sitharaman has been added to the Modi Cabinet 3.0 as well. Sitharaman served as the Union Finance Minister and in Modi 2.0 and is frequently credited with advancing economic changes like the country’s first GST adoption, the reduction of the corporate tax base to 22%, and managing India’s finances during COVID-19 times. She also served as a Defence Minister for a short while in the second term of the Modi government. She is the only female full-time minister who has managed portfolios like defense and finance.
2. Annpurna Devi Cabinet Minister (BJP)
Annpurna Devi, a well-known OBC leader, was sworn in as the second woman Cabinet Minister in the Modi Administration 3.0. She was the Minister of State for Education during the previous term. She was elected to the Lok Sabha from Koderma for a second term in a row. She is thought to play a significant role in strengthening the BJP's position before the state's next assembly elections.
3. Raksha Khadse: Minister of State (BJP)
Raksha Khadse, 37, is a three-term MP from Maharashtra and the daughter-in-law of former BJP leader Eknath Khadse. She ran for and defeated NCP leader Manish Jain in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections in Raver after her husband Nikhil committed suicide in 2013 following a close defeat in the Maharashtra Legislative Council election. In 2014, she won once again by a margin of more than three lakh votes. She defeated NCP candidate Shriram Patil in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with a margin of 2.72 lakh votes.
4. Shobha Karandlaje: Minister of State (BJP)
Karandlaje, a Bengaluru North BJP MP, was sworn in as a minister of state along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She is seen as a close confidante of BS Yediyurappa, the former chief minister and a prominent leader of Karnataka. In the Karnataka government, she also served as the Minister of Rural Development from 2008 to 2009 and the Minister of Food and Civil Supplies from 2010 to 2012. She won her seat with a significant margin of 2.59 lakh votes by defeating INC’s Rajeev Gowda.
5. Anupriya Patel: Minister of State (Apna Dal- Sonyelal)
Anupriya Patel, a well-known figure in the Other Backward Class (OBC) Kurmi community and the daughter of the late Dr. Soneylal Patel, was sworn in as the minister of state along with 71 others. Since 2021, Patel has held the position of Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry. She held the position of Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare from 2016 to 2019.
6. Savitri Thakur: Minister of State (BJP)
The 46-year-old tribal leader Savitri Thakur was sworn in as the minister of state in the cabinet headed by Narendra Modi. She defeated Radheshyam Muvel of the Congress by a margin of over 2.18 lakh votes, after being denied a ticket in the Lok Sabha Election 2019.
7. Nimuben Bhambhaniya: Minister of State (BJP)
Nimuben Bambhaniya, former mayor of Bhavnagar, has been appointed as a minister of state for the Modi government. The 57-year-old easily defeated Umesh Makwana of the Aam Aadmi Party with a massive margin of 4.55 lakh votes. She also served as the state vice president of the BJP Mahila Morcha from 2013 to 2021.
