The World Bank approved a $45 million technical assistance loan for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to enable the body to improve its operational efficiency. The aid will strengthen the institutional capacity of NHAI and will help it to efficiently manage and operate its growing programme. The loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) was approved on 30 November and has a grace period of five years.
About 30% of the total NH network is still single-laned, 53% double-laned and only 17% four/six/eight-laned. The fund is therefore required to develop the NH network which would otherwise pose a key constraint to sustaining high levels of growth.
